Top 10 Questions to Ask Before Buying Off-Grid Solar Systems from a Chinese Manufacturer

China produces 80% of the world’s solar panels and most of the off-grid solar systems sold globally. That means thousands of factories to choose from — and a wide range of quality.
We’ve seen distributors make great partnerships with Chinese manufacturers. We’ve also seen horror stories: containers of dead-on-arrival product, manufacturers that disappear after payment, and warranties that aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.
Here are the 10 questions you must ask before placing an order.
- What Certifications Do Your Products Have?
This is the first question for a reason. Certifications tell you whether the factory tests its products to recognized standards.
Minimum certifications needed: – CE (European safety and performance) – RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) – UN38.3 (Battery transport safety — required for shipping lithium batteries by air) – IEC 61215 / IEC 61646 (Panel quality and performance)
For African markets, some countries also require: – SON (Nigeria) – KEBS (Kenya) – TBS (Tanzania)
A manufacturer with real certifications will share them freely. One that makes excuses or shows vague “certificates” from unknown bodies is a red flag.
- What Battery Chemistry Do You Use?
The battery is the most expensive and most failure-prone component of any solar system. Know exactly what you’re getting.
Good options: – LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate): Safest, longest life (2,000-5,000 cycles), best for solar – Lead-acid (AGM or gel): Cheaper upfront, shorter life (300-700 cycles), still viable for budget systems
Avoid: – Reused/repurposed EV batteries (common in cheap Chinese systems — unpredictable performance) – Unbranded lithium cells (fire risk) – “Lithium-ion” without specifying the chemistry
At BESTWE, we use only Grade A LiFePO4 cells from Tier 1 manufacturers in our lithium battery systems. For our budget lines, we use new AGM lead-acid batteries — never recycled.
- What Is Your Warranty, and How Do You Honor It?
A warranty is only as good as the process behind it. Ask:
- What exactly is covered (parts only? shipping? labor?)?
- What is the process for filing a claim?
- How long does it typically take to resolve a claim?
- Can you provide references of distributors who have made claims?
- What Is Your MOQ, and Can We Start Smaller?
MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) varies widely between factories.
Typical ranges: – ODM orders (existing designs): 100-200 units per model – OEM orders (custom designs): 500-1,000 units per model – Sample orders: 1-10 units (usually with a sample fee)
A factory that insists on 10,000 units for your first order is either too large for your needs or testing whether you’re serious. Most good manufacturers are flexible with initial orders.
BESTWE supports trial orders of 50-100 units for new partners. We want you to validate your market before committing to large volumes.
- What Is the Production Lead Time?
Solar product manufacturing isn’t instant. Know the timeline:
- Sample preparation: 1-2 weeks
- OEM sample development: 2-4 weeks
- Mass production: 2-4 weeks depending on order size
- Shipping: 20-40 days by sea (varies by destination port)
Total from order to arrival: typically 6-12 weeks. Plan your inventory accordingly.
- Can I Inspect the Products Before Shipment?
This is non-negotiable. Every reputable manufacturer allows pre-shipment inspection.
The right answer: “Yes, you or your appointed third-party inspector can visit our factory or we can send photos/videos of the production line and finished goods.”
The wrong answer: “Our quality is guaranteed, no need to inspect.”
At BESTWE, we maintain an open-door policy. We welcome third-party inspections at any stage and provide detailed QC reports with photos for every batch.
- What Payment Terms Do You Offer?
Standard terms for Chinese solar exports:
| Order stage | Typical payment | Notes |
| Sample order | 100% upfront | Usually refundable on bulk order |
| First bulk order | 30% deposit, 70% before shipment | T/T (wire transfer) most common |
| Repeat orders | May negotiate credit terms | After trust is established |
Be cautious of factories demanding 50% deposit or more. 30% is standard. Also ask about payment via Letter of Credit (L/C) for larger orders — it provides protection for both sides.
- Do You Have Export Experience to My Country?
Experience matters. A manufacturer that has shipped to Nigeria knows the documentation requirements. They know which port is faster (or slower). They have relationships with freight forwarders who handle those routes.
Ask for: – Recent shipping documents showing destination – References from other distributors in your country – Knowledge of local certification requirements
- What After-Sales Support Do You Provide?
We covered this in detail in Article 08, but here’s the short version:
A manufacturer committed to partnerships offers: – Spare parts available with your initial order – Technical support (WhatsApp/WeChat/email) – A clear warranty claim process – Local training for your technical team
A manufacturer that disappears after you pay is not a partner.
- Can You Customize the Product for My Market?
Every market is different. Maybe your customers prefer a specific connector type. Maybe your local regulations require a different plug. Maybe the manual must be in French or Swahili or Portuguese.
The ability to customize — even small things like labeling, packaging, and accessories — separates a true manufacturer from a commodity seller.
At BESTWE, customization is part of our standard offering. Branding, packaging language, plug types, and even firmware configurations for PAYGo systems can be adapted to your market.
The Bottom Line
Asking these 10 questions separates serious manufacturers from suppliers who won’t last. The right partner answers them clearly, provides documentation, and treats your concerns as valid. If a factory is evasive, rushed, or dismissive — walk away.
At BESTWE, we answer all 10 questions openly because we believe in building long-term partnerships, not one-time transactions. Start your conversation at https://www.bestweenergy.com/contact-us/.
